Interior decorators and designers are already preparing for the kitchen remodeling and kitchen renovation trends that the New Year will bring in 2023. We can anticipate tremendous developments in terms of kitchen design. In 2023, the focus will be on enhancing comfort, convenience, and individual styles in the kitchen with the use of vibrant colors, advanced technology, and more multifunctional areas. Here are six kitchen design themes that experts predict will be popular in 2023.

Advanced Technology

The use of smart devices in kitchens is anticipated to rise as technology develops further. This includes voice-activated appliances, touchless smart faucets, and other gadgets that can be operated by your smartphone and are linked to your WiFi. Not only are smart kitchens handy, but they also contribute to time and energy savings, since the majority of smart appliances are more energy-efficient than their conventional counterparts.

Butler’s Pantries

Butler’s pantries, also known as sculleries, working pantries, or functional pantries, are becoming increasingly common and are anticipated to be even more appreciated in 2023. They can serve as extra food storage, a designated area for food preparation, a covert coffee bar, and much more. According to David Kallie, President and CEO of Wisconsin-based home design firm Dimension Inc., he anticipates seeing more hidden or “secret” butler’s pantries in the future.

“Customizable appliances that perfectly mimic [kitchen] cabinetry are a trend that has been gaining speed for years,” notes Kallie. “New in concealed kitchen design is the secret butler’s pantry… hidden behind a matching cabinetry panel or a sliding ‘wall’ door.”

Slab Backsplashes

Sleek, expansive slab backsplashes are taking the place of conventional white subway-tile backsplashes and fashionable Zellige tile backsplashes. Simply stated, a slab backsplash is one that’s constructed from a single, large piece of material. It can complement the countertops or function as a focal point in the kitchen by using a strikingly different color or pattern. Although there are numerous variations, granite, marble, and quartz are popular choices for slab backsplashes.

According to Emily Ruff, owner and principal designer of Seattle-based design firm Cohesively Curated Interiors, “Many clients are requesting slab backsplashes that go all the way to the ceiling around windows or around a range hood. You can forgo the upper cabinets to allow the stone to shine!”

As April Gandy, the principal designer of Alluring Designs in Chicago, points out, slab backsplashes are not only aesthetically pleasing; they’re also practical. “Carrying the countertop to the backsplash provides a seamless, clean look,” she observes. “[But] it’s also so easy to keep clean since there are no grout lines.”

Organic Materials

Bringing elements of nature into the house has been a major trend in recent years, and this isn’t expected to change in 2023. Eco-friendly and organic materials, natural stone countertops, wood storage, and cabinets, and metal accents, to name a few, will all continue to be used in kitchen design.

According to Sierra Fallon, the lead designer at Colorado-based Rumor Designs, natural stone countertops, in particular, are a trend to look out for in 2023. While many people will continue to go with quartz, she predicts that the use of gorgeous marbles and quartzites, with greater color on countertops, hood surrounds, and backsplashes, will increase.

The Founder and CEO of Nickson Living, Cameron Johnson, believes that the eco-friendly trend will influence both big and small kitchenware. Johnson lists a number of goods to be on the lookout for in 2023, including “wood or glass bowls in place of plastic, stainless garbage cans, and wood storage containers,” in addition to more expensive items like marble worktops and natural wood cabinets.

Large Islands With Dining Areas

Since the kitchen serves as the social hub of the house, many homeowners are choosing to install bigger kitchen islands there rather than having a separate dining room. Homeowners are “redefining the spaces in our homes,” according to Hilary Matt of New York City-based Hilary Matt Interiors. She believes that “Traditional kitchens are evolving into other parts of the home. In the coming year, I predict larger — and even double — kitchen islands will be integrated to accommodate larger entertaining and gathering spaces in the kitchen.”

Warm Colors Are Popular

While white kitchens will still be a popular option in 2023, we can anticipate seeing a little more color. Warmer hues and vibrant splashes of pigments are becoming more popular among homeowners, in contrast to gray and white farmhouse or monochrome Scandinavian minimalist kitchens. Rumor Designs’ Sierra Fallon predicts that the trend toward utilizing more organic and rich colors in the kitchen will continue through 2023 in all of its components. Expect to see natural, warm wood tones in both light and dark shades replacing all-white cabinets.

We may also anticipate seeing white and gray employed in a substantially warmer way than in past years. According to Stacy Garcia, Chief Inspiration Officer and CEO of New York-based Stacy Garcia Inc., basic gray and stark white are on their way out, while creamy off-whites and warm grays are on their way in.
